H2-View News: Trafigura drops $472m Australian hydrogen project: reports

The 440MW project announced in 2021 was planned for Trafigura’s metals subsidiary Nyrstar Port Pirie smelter in South Australia. The first stage of the project would have introduced an 85MW electrolyser plant before it was scaled up to 440MW. Both the government and Trafigura had reportedly committed AUD $2.5m ($1.6m) each towards the project’s design. The initiative would have produced green ammonia for export. However, the project has now been shelved, reportedly never advancing beyond the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase, and was not included in the Peter Malinauskas Labor government’s hydrogen plans. This is despite the previous Premier [...]

H2-View News: Aramco finalises 50% stake in Air Products Qudra’s Saudi blue hydrogen subsidiary

After agreeing on the deal last July, the partners plan to deliver low-carbon hydrogen – produced from methane with carbon capture – via pipeline to the Jubail Industrial City. H2 View understands that the acquisition will also include options for Aramco to offtake core ammonia components hydrogen and nitrogen from BHIG. The network, in combination with Aramco’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub in Jubail, will help the firm capitalise on domestic and global opportunities to diversify its energy portfolio, according to the Executive Vice President of Strategy & Corporate Development, Ashraf Al Ghazzawi. “This joint venture is another example [...]

H2-View News: Sungrow Hydrogen to manufacture Next Hydrogen electrolysers in China

While Next Hydrogen will retain control of its intellectual property and system design, Sungrow – a major Chinese electrolyser manufacturer with 3GW of capacity – will handle large-scale production, including the balance of plant components like pumps and piping. Beginning next year, Sungrow will manufacture Next Hydrogen electrolysers, including the balance of plant systems, such as pumps and piping, for large-scale orders. They are also exploring North American manufacturing to potentially meet ‘locally made’ rules, which could unlock tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This approach implies a move to future-proof the company against potential restrictions on foreign-made [...]

H2-View News: Extreme H: a race to drive hydrogen adoption

Those behind the Extreme E offroad racing series are set to launch its successor, the Extreme H series, later this year. The new racing series will illustrate the potential of hydrogen-powered racing and showcase the Pioneer 25 car. 1895 caught up with Ali Russell and Andy Welch of Extreme H to get the latest developments and hear more on the vision for the series, with Russell kicking things off with the sense of purpose that lies behind the project. “The vision of Extreme H is that it’s an evolution of Extreme E, with purpose at its heart,” says Russell. “If [...]

H2-View News: Industrial hydrogen makes progress but cost and carbon questions remain

Despite industry-wide setbacks and recalibration, large-scale industrial hydrogen has made impressive steps to becoming a commercial reality in recent months. From Europe to southern Africa, change is firmly underway. Germany’s largest PEM electrolyser has just gone into operation at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site. The electrolyser has a connected load of 54MW and capacity to supply the main plant with up to one metric tonne of this substantial chemical feedstock every hour. H2-View News: German €5bn CfD scheme for industrial switches to H2, carbon capture approved

The Climate Protection Contracts are a 15-year two-way carbon CFD aimed at supporting fuel switching and electrification in sectors like cement, chemical and steel production. Projects will be subject to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and musy cut at least 60% of emissions in the first three years and 90% by the end of the support. Each will be selected through a competitive bidding process and ranked based on the lowest aid amount requested per tonne of CO2 avoided – meaning only the cheapest technologies will succeed. The system will only cover the actual additional costs linked to the [...]

H2-View News: PowerCell lands first order for M2Power 250 hydrogen-based methanol fuel cell

Under the agreement with one of the continent’s “leading” shipyards, the Swedish fuel cell provider will install 2MW of its recently launched fuel cell solution, once it’s delivered in 2029. PowerCell describes the M2Power 250 system as an all-in-one solution that combines a methanol reformer and fuel cells into a single unit, simplifying fuel cell integration for maritime applications. Onboard a ship, the M2Power unit reforms methanol into hydrogen, which is then used by the fuel cell to generate clean electricity. © PowerCell By unifying the reformer and fuel cells under a single control system, the solution is designed to [...]

H2-View News: MOL and CMB.Tech to deploy nine ammonia-powered vessels by 2029

The Newcastlemax bulk carriers and chemical tankers will be a mix of ammonia-fitted and ammonia-ready systems, allowing the hydrogen compound to fuel operations. Three ammonia-fitted 210,000 dwt bulk carriers on order at Qingdao Beihai Shipyard will be jointly owned by CMB.Tech and MOL – with the Japanese shipper chartering them for 12 years. Six chemical tankers – two ammonia-fitted and four ammonia-ready – have also been ordered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyards by CMB.Tech and will be charted to MOL Chemical Tankers (MOLCT) for 10 and seven years respectively. The carriers are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027, [...]

H2-View News: Thyssenkrupp CEO: Green steel plant at risk without reliable hydrogen supply

Currently under construction in Duisburg, the plant has already secured €2bn ($2.2bn) in government funding, with Thyssenkrupp committing a further €1bn ($1.1bn) – its largest single investment to date. Using direct-reduced iron (DRI) technology, it’s set to produce 2.5 million tonnes of green iron annually, later converted into steel. From 2028, it’ll demand at least 104,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen annually- rising to 143,000 tonnes by 2029 and peaking at 151,000 by 2036. Thyssenkrupp put out a supply call last year. In a speech addressed to the regional parliament of North-Rhine Westphalia, Lopez said, “With this project, we are not [...]

H2-View News: Canadian election: jobs, taxes, Trump – what about clean energy and H2?

New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election for April 28 to build a mandate to challenge US President Donald Trump. It sets up Carney’s Liberal Party for a short, fierce campaign against the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre – one that will centre on Canada’s relationship with an increasingly combative White House.
