Hydrogen offtake agreements are drawing heavily from the long-term gas and LNG contracts that shaped global energy trade, but they’re being adapted to avoid previous pitfalls. New research from the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies has highlighted that while LNG sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) lock offtakers into 20–30-year terms and costly arbitration battles over price reviews, hydrogen SPAs are expected to be shorter, more flexible and shaped by subsidy and certification regimes. The 52km pipeline network between Vlieghuis in the Netherlands and Ochtrup in Germany will form part of the wider Northwest European hydrogen backbone to connect production centres and import terminals with industrial regions. Aldar is the first developer in the MENA region to incorporate hydrogen-based steel rebar into a construction project. In Sustainable City, Yas Island, the company is building the first Net Zero carbon mosque. Most of the hydrogen has been used to produce over 1.15 Gwh of clean electricity via a hydrogen gas engine, helping to abate 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The German technology firm has been selected as the preferred supplier to deliver modular 20MW alkaline electrolysers for green hydrogen production at what PGS says will be the world’s largest green iron plant. The Nel spin-off logged revenues of €5.6m ($6.5m), up from €3.7m ($4.3m) in Q1 but down on the same period in 2024.
