H2-View News: Vema Hydrogen secures $13m to bring $1/kg hydrogen to market
The North Carolina startup will use the funds to develop North America’s first full-scale SGH pilot wells, injecting water and a catalyst into iron rock to mimic natural hydrogen formation. Vema Hydrogen claims its process consumes less than 3kWh per kg of hydrogen, achieving production costs below $1/kg. The funding round was co-led by Extantia Capital with Propeller Ventures and participating from Zero Carbon Capital, Pace Ventures and Existing investor Grantham Foundation. In an online statement, Extantia explained the reasons for investing in Vema. “The company is developing a novel approach for the production of cheap and clean hydrogen by [...]
H2-View News: CPKC to introduce up to seven more hydrogen-powered locomotives in 2025
This year, the company will deploy three additional hydrogen-powered locomotives along with a tender car. By late 2025, CPKC plans to expand its hydrogen fleet further with four more hydrogen locomotives. Additionally, the Canadian rail company claimed it’s making “significant strides” with its Hydrogen Locomotive Programme. In an online statement, CPKC said, “[The programme] has swiftly progressed from initial movement trials to recording more than 6,000 miles in freight service testing by the end of 2024.” Keith Creel, CPKC’s President and CEO, said the firm is “committed” to improving its locomotive operating efficiency and advancing real-world testing of hydrogen locomotives. [...]
H2-View News: Precision Micro secures fuel cell component deal with German engineering firm
Under the agreement, Precision Micro will use its etching process to produce the bipolar plates, designed to facilitate the recirculation of unused hydrogen in a fuel cell. The components will reportedly be used for a fuel cell vehicle powertrain. H2 View understands that the production will follow a single-sourcing model, which Precision Micro will undertake in accordance with the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) 16949, throughout the product’s lifecycle. “This partnership underscores the unique advantages of photochemical etching for the hydrogen sector and reflects our commitment to supporting innovative solutions for the future of mobility,” explained Markus Rettig, Sales Manager [...]
H2-View News: Novelis ‘successfully’ tests hydrogen-powered aluminium recycling in the UK
Several series of tests were conducted by blending different percentages of hydrogen with natural gas, ranging from 30-100%, to evaluate the impact on existing infrastructure and equipment compatibility. Several hundred tonnes of 3000 series scrap aluminium alloy were remelted and cast into sheet ingots. Additionally, all relevant parameters were measured to assess any impact on the product, process, operating environment and emissions. Trial results will inform a full post-trial evaluation report, which is expected later in 2025. H2 View understands that further downstream processing will be conducted at Novelis’ other European plants to establish the feasibility of end-to-end hydrogen-powered aluminium [...]
H2-View News: Bosch drops SOFC development to focus on PEM hydrogen production
The Germany tech giant, which had partnered with UK-based solid oxide hydrogen technology licensor Ceres to develop its systems, will treat its minority interest in Ceres as a “non-core financial investment” and explore divesting the stake. Bosch said it had achieved a high level of technical maturity in its SOFC technology, but admitted “the market has not developed as expected.” “The conversion of hydrogen into electricity is not yet being given the necessary priority in Europe, and especially in Germany,” the company said. “This means that further engineering effort will be required in the years ahead, and this will significantly [...]
H2-View News: Trio’s woes shine spotlight on stalling hydrogen fuel cell trucking sector
It’s been a turbulent first quarter for the hydrogen trucking sector. Wednesday’s (February 19) news that Nikola has been forced into Chapter 11 may not come as a surprise to those who have been following its fortunes, but it will raise awareness around the economic challenges facing the FCEV trucking sector. H2-View News: McPhy faces cash shortfall by Q3 without hydrogen project finalisation and funding
It comes as the firm reported FY 2024 revenues of €13.1m ($16.7m) – down 30% on 2023. McPhy attributed the decline primarily to the lack of revenue recognition from the 20MW Djewels green hydrogen plant in the Netherlands, as well as deductions related to compensation for the termination of historical refuelling station contracts. Despite the revenue decline, McPhy saw a 115% increase in orders from 2023, reaching €28.1m ($29.3m). This growth expanded its backlog by 25%, bringing it to €29.8m ($31.1m). However, throughout 2024, McPhy burned through €24m ($25.1m) in cash, reducing its cash position to around €39m ($40.7m) at [...]
H2-View News: Whyalla green hydrogen project paused as $374m funding is redirected to steelworks
The announcement follows GFG Alliance’s decision to delay its offtake commitment, which involved using green hydrogen from the planned adjacent plant to decarbonise its steel operations. Read more: Whyalla hydrogen project future uncertain as GFG Alliance delays offtake commitment The South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, stated there’s “no point in producing hydrogen if there’s not a customer for it,” referencing the steelworks. Malinauskas added, “The first step is to realise what’s meant to happen with GFG. [This means] investing in the steelworks and transitioning to electric arc furnace with direct reduced iron (DRI), and that must happen concurrently with a [...]
H2-View News: Hydrogenious LOHC’s top team takes board seats as it targets industrial-scale projects
In a statement released today (February 20), the company said its founder, Dr. Daniel Teichmann, who had served as CEO since its founding in 2014, would become Executive Chairman of Hydrogenious’ board. Additionally, the previous chief strategy officer, Dr. Andreas Lehamnn, has taken over as CEO and also joined the board, along with Chief Technology Officer Dr. Caspar Paetz, and Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Stefan Buerkle. The shakeup is hoped to “realign” the organisation’s focus on delivering large-scale projects for its liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology, which it slates as a solution to hydrogen transportation issues. AP Ventures, Temasek, [...]
H2-View News: AEM start-up raises $1.5m to meet decentralised, smaller-scale hydrogen demand
The seed round, led by Cloudberry Pioneer Investments, saw participation from the National University of Singapore (NUS), TK & Partners, and angel investors. The funding will support the development of a 2MW manufacturing facility in India to scale production of its AEM electrolysers, develop a 25kW single-stack system, and begin expanding across India and Southeast Asia. By focusing on decentralised, on-site production for small- to mid-size industries, the start-up says it can eliminate transportation costs, storage risks and emissions, “offering industries a resilient, self-sufficient alternative” to traditional hydrogen sourcing. Hydgen Chairman, Michael Gryseels, said, “Our technology makes hydrogen production local, [...]
