In the first installation the plant will have 500MW of electrolyser capacity, with plans for the site to be expanded to 2GW in 2027 to supply green hydrogen to large industrial consumers on the Mediterranean coast.
Under the engineering contract, Técnicas Reunidas will study the configuration of the plant, prepare relevant technical documentation to obtain permits, and complete cost estimations.
Dubbed Catalina, the project was announced 12 months ago (February 2022) by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Enagás, Naturgy, Fertiberia, and Vestas, with construction scheduled to kick off at the end of this year (2023).
Coupled with 1.7GW of wind and solar energy, the 500MW initial phase is expected to produce up to 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
H2 View understands hydrogen produced from the site will be transported through a 221km pipeline to supply industrial consumers in the Mediterranean, including a newly built state-of-the-art green ammonia plant planned to produce 247,000 tonnes per year.
“This contract is yet another example of our company’s firm commitment to projects related to energy transition and decarbonisation, as it adds to the long list of initiatives that we have been developing the last three years in relation to green hydrogen, the circular economy, and carbon capture,” said Gonzalo Pardo, Commercial Director of Energy and Energy Transition at Técnicas Reunidas.
In 2021, Técnicas Reunidas and Acerinox agreed to work together to study decarbonisation processes of Spanish Acerinox Europa stainless steel production facilities with hydrogen.

Commenting on the Catalina project, José Gómez-Arroyo, Project Director, PtX Spain at CIP, said, “The plant constitutes a world-scale green hydrogen project that will make an extraordinary contribution to the energy transition and the reduction of emissions from the Spanish industry, as well as to energy independence of Europe. It is one of the first projects on this scale in Spain that will help make the basic hydrogen infrastructure viable, as well as international interconnections.”
