OGL, subsidiary of Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), will offer the next-generation transport system in a technical partnership with Reliance.

A single hydrogen fill will allow the bus to travel up to 400km with a refill time of about 15 minutes.

Type 4 hydrogen cylinders are established on top of the bus, being capable to withstand temperatures between -20° and 85°.

Olectra aims to commercial launch three of the 12-metre, 32-to-49 seat capacity buses within a year.

The hydrogen bus, a full carbon-free alternative to traditional public transport, will contribute towards the Indian Government’s   carbon free hydrogen ambitions.

India, which is targeting production of 5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030, has provided Rs19,000 core incentive for the private sector under its National Hydrogen Mission.

Earlier this year, the European Investment Bank (EIB) joined the India Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A) to bring industry, investors and government agencies together on green hydrogen hubs and projects, with €1bn of indicative funding.

Under a MoU, the EIB is exploring a credit facility with the Indian Government to provide investments to critical public sectors supporting the development of the green hydrogen industry.

According to EIB, the facility would support the effort to commercialise upcoming green hydrogen technologies and accelerate the cost reduction by investing in innovation, R&D, green hydrogen hubs and pilot projects.

Addressing a webinar yesterday to mark the Union Budget 2023-24, Prime Minister Modi said the country’s potential in renewable energy “is no less than a goldmine”, as it aims for 500GW of renewables by 2030.

In 2021, a hydrogen-powered bus was developed in India by an extensive collaboration between Sentient Labs, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National Chemical Laboratory (NCL).

The nine metres, 32-seater, air-conditioned vehicle has been designed to provide a range of 450kms with 30kgs of hydrogen.
