BetterHubs aims to build ‘dozens of hydrogen hubs’, carbon capture hubs and other energy projects, via funding from the US Department of Energy (DoE).

The initiative has developed a set of core objectives to help governments, companies, investors and local communities, that seek to raise expectations for hub projects and set a new standard for clean industrial development.

BetterHubs plans to monitor and mitigate climate pollutant emissions; track, minimise and mitigate local and international environmental impacts and responsibly and efficiently site and resource hub operations.

It will also demonstrate safe and effective carbon management from capture to sequestration where applicable.

Last year, the DoE released a Notice of Intent to fund the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law $8bn programme to develop regional clean hydrogen hubs across the US.

The planned development of hydrogen hubs come as part of the DoE’s strategy for achieving a 100% clean electric grid by 2035 and reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, as well as the ‘Hydrogen Shot’ which aims to cut the cost of clean hydrogen to $1 per kg within ten years.

The EDF’s BetterHub initiative will apply for government funding via the DoE, after it opened applications in September (2023).

H2 View understands the DoE is aiming to select six to 10 hubs to receive a combined total of up to $7bn in federal funding under the initial programme. Full applications must be submitted by April 7.

The DoE has said additional funding opportunities may follow to accelerate and expand the network of clean hydrogen projects.
