The company is set to build, own, and operate the first of several 5MW PEM electrolysers to increase its hydrogen production capacity at its existing plant in Ontario, California, which it says will produce enough green hydrogen to avoid up to 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Plans for the Ontario plant were revealed in 2020. At the time Linde said it would produce enough green hydrogen to fuel up to 1,600 vehicles per day.

Expected to kickstart operations in the second half of 2024, the new electrolyser comes as part of Linde’s plans to boost green hydrogen production across the wider US.

“We continue to see growing demand for green hydrogen as decarbonisation in the mobility sector becomes a reality,” said Marcos Cuevas, Vice-President West Region at Linde. “As the largest liquid hydrogen producer in the US, we are proud to leverage our technology and expertise to help California achieve its ambitious climate goals.”

In September last year (2022), Linde announced it would build a 35MW PEM electrolyser in Niagara Falls, US, doubling its green liquid hydrogen production capacity in the US.

Linde said in 2021 it would invest more than $1bn in decarbonisation initiatives and triple the amount of its clean hydrogen production by 2028.
