Under a signed cooperation agreement, the companies will work to validate the pump for generating cryo-compressed hydrogen gas (CCH2), or CRYOGAS, which the companies say can reach densities of over 80kg/m3 at pressures between 30 and 40Mpa.

As CRYOGAS can be generated through cryogenic compression of liquid hydrogen, as well as cryo-cooling of compressed hydrogen gas, Cryomotive and Fives target to develop a reciprocating pump to compress liquid hydrogen at a high flow rate, low footprint, and low energy consumption.

Designed by Fives, the Cryomec Hy-Filling™ pump is hoped to act as a key component in future hydrogen refuelling stations. Fives say the pump will be able to offer fuel to future hydrogen-powered trucks within 10-15 minutes for 80kh of Cryogas, which it believes will allow them to drive 1,000km.

“Cryomotive’s CCH2 CRYOGAS storage and refuelling technology can pave the way for emission-free hydrogen-powered long-haul trucks at par with diesel in terms of range, refuelling time, and cost,” said Christiane Heyer, Managing Director and co-founder of Cryomotive.

In 2021, Chart Industries entered into a strategic partnership with Cryomotive to develop its storage and refuelling technology, making a minority investment of €6.5m.

Heyer, added, “Fives’ reciprocating cryogenic pump to generate high-density CRYOGAS is a key enabler of future cost-effective hydrogen refuelling stations.”

Frédéric Thrum, Deputy General Manager of Fives and President of the Energy Division, commented, “Fives is proud to enter a strategic partnership with Cryomotive in the field of CRYOGAS, and to extend its footprint as a key hydrogen pump technology provider to the industry. This agreement follows our ambition to serve the decarbonisation of industry, providing cutting-edge cryogenic equipment along the hydrogen value chain.”
