The company has said the technology will be used at the centre of its planned 40 tonne heavy goods vehicle (HGV) which it says will be the ‘first’ indigenous UK designed and developed hydrogen-electric HGV market.

H2 View understands HVS’ powertrain employs a fuel cell system and energy storage system to deploy electricity to its vehicle’s electric motors, controlled by its own advanced control system, dubbed SEMAS, which it says will deliver ‘class-leading’ fuel efficiency and durability.
The release comes as the UK Government targets to curtail sales of all non-zero emission 3.5-26 tonne HGVs by 2035 or earlier, and all sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040.
HVS has said its ground-up approach for creating its HGV offers a package that will provide an overall lower total cost of ownership for end-users. H2 View spoke to Daniel Musenga-Grant, Head of Sustainability and CSR at HVS about the company’s approach to hydrogen mobility ahead of the demonstrator launch.

In October (2022), HVS announced it had received a £25m ($28m) investment from EG Group, on top of a previous £5m investment in 2021.

Commenting on the demonstrator showcase, Jawad Khursheed, CEO of HVS, said, “This technology demonstrator showcases our ground-breaking hydrogen-electric commercial vehicle design and advanced powertrain technology, a precursor to our HGV model.
“Hydrogen is the perfect fuel for the haulage industry, offering long ranges and quick refuelling thanks to stations easily integrated into key transport networks.
“What’s more, we will supply our customers with the most advanced HGV in the sector delivering a step change in driving experience, lowest total cost of ownership and market-leading fleet management support.”
H2 View’s Hydrogen Mobility Snap Summit – November 29
With the mobility pillar consistently a hot topic for hydrogen markets and arguably the most anticipated and relatable application of the energy transition, H2 View stages a Mobility Snap Summit this November to summarise the progress made in 2022 and look ahead to what’s still to come.
Infrastructure challenges remain. Questions linger over policy and implementation. Many wonder which strand of the transport sector will blaze the trail in hydrogen power first, and likewise which region. There are clear challenges ahead, yet considerable progress made in 2022 and bright spots ahead in 2023 and beyond.
Join H2 View this November for a half-day online event dedicated to unearthing the progress made, dissecting the challenges to be met and establishing the state-of-play across mobility as 2023 approaches. Find more information here.
Premium Subscribers to H2 View have access to this event as part of their subscription package; non-subscribers can secure access to the event with a delegate ticket ($99). All delegates can access the event on-demand from 1st December.
