The facility, planned to be developed in the Delfzijl chemical cluster in the province of Groningen, is expected to produce more than 20,000 tonnes of renewable green hydrogen each year, which Lhyfe says could displace 2.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide within a decade.

H2 View understands the company has already secured the plot of land, and renewable energy connections for the plant. Expected to be commissioned as early as 2026, Lhyfe hopes it will meet growing industrial demand for green hydrogen in the area.

This latest announcement follows off the back of the company revealing it had launched its UK operations in Northeast England, with aims of large-scale decarbonisation.

Lhyfe says it hopes to ramp up the renewable hydrogen market across Europe. It has expressed intentions of establishing installed production capacity of 3GW by 2030.

Commenting on the Dutch expansion plans, Luc Grare, Head of Central and Eastern Eruope at Lhyfe, said, “Delfzijl is an ideal location for renewable green hydrogen production as it has direct access to renewable energies from its offshore wind power plants which are situated off the coast.

“Groningen is one of Europe’s pioneers when it comes to the energy transition.

“The region’s goal is to become the leading hydrogen valley of North-Western Europe and to build up a complete value chain from production, storage and transportation of green hydrogen.

“We fully support this development and are proud to be part of the journey.
“Renewable green hydrogen as an energy carrier will support the transport of offshore generated energy through the country, helping to ease an already congested electricity grid.

“As such, Lhyfe’s Delfzijl plant will be able to supply green hydrogen throughout the Netherlands, as well as to potential off-takers in Germany and other bordering countries.”
