Air Products adds liquefaction to Port of Rotterdam grey hydrogen plant

Expected to be operational in 2027, the company said the liquid hydrogen facility was “over 65% complete.” The liquefier’s capacity has not been revealed.

Air Products said it will help it meet demand in sectors like electronics manufacturing, space applications, and industrial processing across Benelux, France, Germany, and the UK.

Liquefier installations are a typical way for industrial gas firms to meet merchant demand for hydrogen from existing central plants supplying large-scale nearby offtakers.

Compared to compressed hydrogen gas, liquid hydrogen has a far higher density, meaning fewer trucks can be used to transport volumes.

The firm’s Port of Rotterdam 300-tonne-per-day HyCO4 plant currently supplies hydrogen to refineries in the area. The plant is currently being equipped with carbon capture technology that could cut around 50% of its carbon dioxide emissions.

Due online in 2026, CO2 captured from the facility will be fed into the Porthos CO2 network for permanent storage under the North Sea.
