Topsoe awarded FEED deal for $1.6bn green ammonia project in Jordan

Under a new agreement, the Danish technology group will look to integrate its ammonia synthesis technology at the 100,000 tonne-per-year green ammonia plant planned for operation in 2030.

Located in the Port of Aqaba, the JGA joint venture between Polish developer Hynfra and the UK’s Fidelity Group aims to deploy 700MW of renewable energy to create and convert green hydrogen into green ammonia for international fertiliser markets.

The project has seen $1.6bn of funding since its launch in 2024.

Kim Hedegaard, CEO Power-to-X at Topsoe, said the FEED agreement will help Jordan secure a position as an important market for the molecule in the Middle East.

The Jordanian government is increasingly looking to establish the country as a hydrogen hub, developing water desalination, ammonia storage, and export terminals to support the mission.

With high solar and wind potential, the country is aiming for a 31% share of renewables in its total power generation capacity by 2030.

Tomoho Umeda, CEO at Hynfra, added, “Our partnership with Topsoe on the JGA project is a direct response to the fragility of global trade and the volatility of gas prices.”

Topsoe’s involvement comes after it announced a strategic review of its solid oxide electrolyser scale-up and the termination of a 100MW supply agreement with developer First Ammonia.

Just weeks ago, Topsoe’s new CEO told H2 View that the clean hydrogen sector found itself in a “structural slowdown.”
