Italian industrial gas firm to add green hydrogen production into operations

IGAT, a subsidiary of Italian chemical group SIAD, selected IMI to supply a 2MW PEM electrolyser that will be integrated alongside its existing operations in Pignataro Maggiore to decarbonise its footprint.

The company currently operates an air separation plant producing nitrogen, oxygen, and argon.

IGAT plans to use “a portion” of the hydrogen internally, which it said will improve energy autonomy and help manage operating costs. The use of the remaining volumes remains undisclosed.

The firm has not revealed when it expects to bring the electrolyser online.

The project is being funded by Italy’s Hydrogen Valley programme, which aims to support green hydrogen production and use clusters.

Massimo Iorio, CEO of IGAT, said that the electrolyser opens a “new phase” for the company.

Industrial gas companies are seen as critical players in the development of green hydrogen, with expertise in plant operation and gas distribution.

It follows Italy’s transposition of EU-set mandates for green hydrogen consumption in transport and industry.

Under the now adopted Legislative Decree 5/2026, 42% of all hydrogen used in industrial applications will need to be renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO)-compliant by 2030.

RFNBOs will also need to make up 1% of all transport energy consumption by the same date.
