Uniper’s 120MW UK green hydrogen project granted planning permission

The Humber H2ub project at the German major’s existing Killingholme site is expected to begin operations by 2029.

It would supply Phillips 66’s nearby refinery, reducing its Scope 1 operational emissions, and is shortlisted for funding from the government’s second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2).

Set to undergo a front-end engineering design study by UK-based ITM Power, it could deploy six of the OEM’s 20MW electrolyser units to produce over 17,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

The North Lincolnshire Council approved planning permission for H2ub following an Environmental Impact Assessment and public consultation programme.

H2 View understands that power for the plant will come from wind generation, with the region connected to around 4.9GW of operational offshore wind capacity.

The HAR2 subsidy scheme could provide revenue support through 15-years of contract-for-difference style deals with the firm. However, the widely criticised initiative has been stalled seemingly in a state of limbo since 27 projects were shortlisted in 2025.

The Humber is a key region in the UK’s hydrogen development. With various players looking to set up green and blue hydrogen production, National Gas recently confirmed the first 300-mile stretch of the country’s hydrogen backbone would run through the region.

It will connect to a 54km network being pursued by the operator alongside Centrica, Equinor, and SSE Thermal.
