The German original equipment manufacturer (OEM) was awarded the contract by energy trading firm Select Energy and Indian developer Juno Joule on the green ammonia production facility, which is set for a final investment decision by April 2027.
Located on India’s East coast, near Mulapeta Port, the project aims to produce molecules fuel compliant with EU renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) criteria for export.
It could produce up to one million-tonnes-per-year of green ammonia from approximately 180,000 tonnes of green hydrogen produced by Thyssenkrupp Nucera’s 20MW Scalum alkaline electrolysis modules.
Dr Werner Ponikwar, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera, said the project represents the company’s first in the Indian market, an important milestone in accelerating India’s transition to a green hydrogen economy.
“The collaboration with Juno Joule reflects [our] strong strategic drive to advance green hydrogen in India,” He continued.
This comes after the OEM inked a deal with German development agency GIZ to explore commercial opportunities in India.
India is an increasingly attractive market for European players, who face delays in market development at home. India has been looking to build up production capacity for exports to markets like Europe
German firms are currently leading the offtake of India’s production capacity. Uniper and RWE have both signed large-scale agreements with AM Green for green ammonia from their plant under construction in Kakinada.
Although conversion losses and end-use limitations continue to shape its deployment, green ammonia remains the most efficient method of transporting and utilising green hydrogen far from its point of production.
