Under a “long-term contract”, heavy-duty transport and industrial machinery firm MaserFrakt will receive the molecules to support the uptake of hydrogen vehicles in its fleet.
While the contract’s terms, like sales volume or end date, have not been revealed, H2 View understands hydrogen will be supplied for Norwegian Hydrogen’s 1.3-tonne-per-day Hellesylt Hydrogen Hub.
MaserFrakt has not said how many hydrogen trucks it will introduce into its fleet of more than 1,100 vehicles, including over 600 trucks.
“With green hydrogen-powered trucks, we can reduce our carbon footprint without compromising capacity or availability,” said Maserfrakt CEO, Per Bondemark.
Norwegian Hydrogen, which is already looking to supply applications in Sweden, also has plans for a number of production sites across Nordic nations in various stages of development.
Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, slated Sweden as an early mover in its adoption.
This comes as heavy-duty vehicle operators in Europe increasingly look to decarbonise their fleets in line with EU green hydrogen usage mandates in the mobility sector. 1.2% of energy in the sector must derive from green hydrogen by 2030 under the Renewable Energy Directive III.
DHL recently trialled a hydrogen truck for its delivery services in the Netherlands as it aims to operate a diesel-free fleet this year.
Hydrogen remains an expensive pathway to decarbonising heavy-duty transport with stiff competition from battery electric vehicles.
Its proponents argue that it is the only viable option with constrained grid access and long charging times forming bottlenecks to alternatives.
