The hydrogen will power six of the firm’s fuel cell generators to charge batteries used in electric machinery at National Highway’s Lower Thames Crossing construction project.
According to the company, the hydrogen produced at its flagship 15MW HyMarnham project will eliminate the need for over 12 million litres of diesel and save an estimated 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Andrew Cunningham, CEO of GeoPura, praised the example set by deploying clean fuels on the construction project, stressing that it also strengthens the British hydrogen supply chain.
The Lower Thames Crossing is a planned road tunnel under the Thames Estuary to link the English counties of Kent and Essex. National Highways has committed to dramatically reducing the use of diesel in the project’s construction.
“I congratulate the Lower Thames Crossing for setting a powerful example of how major infrastructure can be delivered sustainably,” Cunningham said.
HyMarnham secured revenue support under the UK government’s first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1) and is set to be the first project backed by the scheme to enter operations.
In October 2025, Geopura lined up a £27m ($36m) loan from Barclays and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark to construct the facility.
The construction sector is increasingly emerging as a promising offtaker for UK hydrogen producers, with the UK’s Construction Leadership Council aiming to slash 78% of diesel on sites by 2035.
Hitachi Energy recently completed a four-week trial of its hydrogen fuel-cell generator at a UK construction site, while AFC Energy has been progressing plans to deploy its small-scale ammonia crackers and generators across UK construction sites.
Barriers, however, still exist in rolling hydrogen into the sector. High fuel costs relative to diesel, limited and geographically constrained supply, and the logistical complexities of transporting and storing hydrogen safely all present potential bottlenecks.
