The engineering and technology company will provide EPC services for the project in Delfzijl, being developed by Dutch airline KLM’s SAF subsidiary SkyNRG.
The DSL-O1 plant will use the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) production pathway, utilising waste feedstocks such as used cooking oil.
However, it will feature an on-site steam methane reformer (SMR) plant for hydrogen production.
SMRs are a primary production method for grey hydrogen, typically emitting 9–12kg of carbon dioxide per kilogram of hydrogen produced. Technip has not revealed whether the plant would be equipped with carbon capture technology.
H2 View has contacted Technip for confirmation.
Set to become SkyNRG’s sixth European HEFA-based SAF plant, CEO Maarten van Dijk said the EPC contract was a “defining step” in the firm’s production plans.
“Together with Technip Energies…we can now turn years of development into a physical facility,” he said.
It comes as European ReFuelEU Aviation regulation mandates that at least 10% of aviation fuel must come from SAF by 2030, with a target of up to 70% by 2050.
