CIMC-Hexagon rolls out new hydrogen storage and transport system

The JV between CIMC Enric and Hexagon Purus said the 20-foot Type 4 hydrogen MEGC is suitable for road, rail, and waterway transport, and will address the need for “efficient and economical” hydrogen logistics in China.

Designed to meet international standards, CIMC-Hexagon claims it will lower the cost of transporting hydrogen.

Available in sizes from 10 to 45 feet, the JV said in a 40-foot configuration, the unit could store one tonne of hydrogen at 38MPa.

The JV said it will initially target the wider Asian market before focusing on China.

“Going forward, CIMC-Hexagon will maximise the synergy of its parent company’s technology, distribution channels, and production capacity to optimise the cost and efficiency of hydrogen delivery,” it said in a statement.

Hexagon Purus faced a rocky 2025 with hydrogen sales decreasing in Western markets.

European players, like the Norwegian firm, are increasingly betting on China’s hydrogen momentum.

Recently, French technology firm Forvia, which also produces Type 4 hydrogen storage tanks, made €40m ($47m) available for its hydrogen-focused subsidiary in China.
