Sunfire to supply alkaline electrolysers for Repsol’s two 100MW hydrogen plants

Each will consist of ten 10MW electrolysers and produce up to 15,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually for the decarbonisation of the oil major’s refining processes.

The German company will install its pressurised alkaline electrolysers at Repsol’s industrial complex in Cartagena and its oil refinery in Muskiz, outside of Bilbao.

Upon commissioning, expected for 2029, each system could prevent up to 167,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Sunfire has previously delivered electrolysers for customers including Rheinmetall, Uniper, and Neste.

CEO of Sunfire, Nils Aldag, hailed Spain’s potential for green hydrogen, saying that its collaboration with Repsol is advancing the country’s “leading role”.

A combined €315m ($374m) from EU funding has been allocated for the plants having recognised both as Projects of Common European Interest.

In 2024, the Spanish government unveiled plans to see green hydrogen meet 74% of its industrial hydrogen demand by 2030 and treble its installed electrolyser capacity target to 12GW.

Meanwhile, the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) has started penalising carbon emissions from industrial processes, effectively pushes refiners to clean up their processes.
