Toyota Australia pushes ahead on hydrogen refuelling with Hydrexia order

Malaysia-based Hydrexia, which manufactures skid-mounted hydrogen refuelling stations for temporary or mobile applications, said the order would allow Australian consumers to choose from a wider range of vehicles and technologies.

The exact number of stations ordered by TMCA has not been revealed. However, Hydrexia will provide maintenance of the systems.

TMCA has also not announced where it will deploy the equipment.

It comes after Hydrexia provided Toyota with mobile refuelling systems for an event in Malaysia last year. As of late 2024, Hydrexia claimed to have participated in over 105 HRSs, including the “world’s largest”, with service capacities ranging from 80 to 6,400kg per day.

TMCA’s move comes after the automotive major launched the Hydrogen Transport Forum, a coalition alongside BMW and Hyundai, in May 2025.

The trio aims to lobby government, infrastructure providers, and hydrogen suppliers, as well as collaborating on data and project viability to advocate for funding and policy advancing hydrogen mobility in Australia.

Hydrogen refuelling stations are being increasingly deployed, particularly across heavy-duty transport and buses. However, early stations designed with high utilisation in mind have seen lower than expected usage, leading to various challenges.
