AM Green breaks ground on huge Indian green hydrogen-based ammonia plant

The Greenko spin-out started construction on the first phase of the mega project at the site formerly owned by Nagarjuna Fertilizers, which is lined up to supply volumes of green ammonia to Europe.

By mid 2027, AM Green expects to begin producing 0.5 mtpa of green ammonia ahead of reaching full production.

At full capacity, the project will comprise 1.95GW of alkaline electrolysers, 7.5GW of renewables, and 2GW of pumped storage. It has lined up John Cockerill electrolysers, and “round-the-clock” renewable energy power purchase agreements.

Chief Minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, said the first equipment installations at the site moved the state closer to becoming a “net exporter of green energy.”

AM Green has inked a firm to supply 500,000 tonnes of Kakinada-made green ammonia to German energy firm Uniper, with first deliveries expected by 2028. The firm is also exploring shipping the green molecules to chemicals major BASF, as well as power firm RWE.

These deals could be the first examples of large-scale green hydrogen trade between Europe and India.

AM Green said the project was creating “real economic impact” by reviving legacy industrial infrastructure, creating jobs, and building a new “clean energy ecosystem in the region.”

India has increasingly been positioning itself as a major green hydrogen supplier for regions like Europe, by leaning on its strong renewables potential.
