RWE begins commissioning first 100MW of Lingen green hydrogen plant

Located at RWE’s Lingen gas-fired power plant, the 300MW Get H2 Nukleus project will deploy 200MW of PEM electrolysers from ITM Power alongside 100MW of alkaline systems supplied by Sunfire.

Commissioning has started ahead of a planned 2026 start of commercial operations, with hydrogen production expected to begin in 2027.

Output from the plant will be fed into RWE’s cavern storage facility in Gronau-Epe.

Running until 2044, RWE has signed a 15-year offtake agreement with TotalEnergies for 30,000 tonnes per year to displace grey hydrogen at its Leuna refinery, with volumes transported via a 600km section of Germany’s hydrogen core network.

However, as the plant is not expected to produce hydrogen until 2027, the agreement leaves a three-year offtake gap.

It remains unclear where RWE intends to place volumes prior to 2030.
