Verne signs long-term hydrogen supply deal for its California data centres

Under the agreement, Verne will use the proposed hydrogen supply to provide on-site, low-emission power and cooling solutions to its data centre customers.

According to the company’s statement, hydrogen production is expected to ramp up to more than 36,000 tonnes per year over the contract, subject to the successful deployment of pilot wells and project development.

However, Vema Hydrogen, which is developing engineered mineral hydrogen technologies, is not yet producing hydrogen commercially.

The company says its technology can accelerate naturally occurring subsurface reactions to generate hydrogen at scale.

It’s currently exploring multiple prospective pilot sites in North America and has stated that initial operations could begin this decade.

Verne CEO Ted McKlveen highlighted hydrogen’s role in meeting both reliability and sustainability requirements.

“AI is driving unprecedented demand for power, and the industry desperately needs scalable solutions like Vema’s Engineered Mineral Hydrogen,” he added.

Verne already deploys hydrogen-powered off-grid solutions using third-party fuel and established fuel cell technologies.
