Operated by European power producer Fortum, the project is located near the Loviisa nuclear power plant and will draw electricity from the grid and use household water sources to produce hydrogen.
“Reaching first hydrogen production is the result of focused work by our cross-functional commissioning team,” explained Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen.
Following production of the first volumes, the partners plan to continue further testing and operational activities in line with the agreed project plan.
The Estonian electrolyser OEM deployed the 1MW system in October. The project is expected to gather data on hydrogen production.
Some of the produced hydrogen could be used in the Loviisa plant’s own processes.
A hydrogen refuelling station is also set to be built to deliver hydrogen to industrial customers.
Earlier this year, Stargate opened its new alkaline electrolyser factory with a full 2025 order book.
The plant, which will initially deliver 140MW of systems per year, could be expanded to over 1GW after its first phase with minor additional investments.
