Gas networks and unions challenge UK shift toward more ‘focused’ hydrogen role

UK gas, industry, and labour lobbyists have warned the government against narrowing the role of hydrogen in its delayed hydrogen strategy refresh, arguing reduced ambitions would undermine investment, jobs, and competitiveness.

In a letter sent to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, the heads of Future Energy Networks, the GMB union, the Hydrogen Energy Association, and the Green Gas Taskforce said the strategy represented a “make or break moment” for the UK hydrogen industry.

They cautioned any move to prescribe where hydrogen can and cannot be used, or to significantly constrain production pathways, risks deterring private capital and pushing investment overseas.
