Linde LienHwa begins hydrogen refuelling operations in Taiwan

The Tree Valley station in Tainan is a demonstration site intended to act as a platform linking government, industry, and academia to advance local hydrogen applications.

CPC’s Nanzih station in Kaohsiung can serve up to seven hydrogen buses per day and supports both 700 bar and 350 bar fuel cell vehicles.

“With support from authorities and multiple partners, every step in this project became the first of its kind in Taiwan,” said Jeng-Zen Fang, Chairman at CPC.

A heavy-duty fuel cell truck, which was announced in October, will join LLH’s fleet once regulatory inspections and capacity validation are completed.

“This will help stakeholders better understand how fuel cell vehicles can meet heavy duty, long haul, and high payload transportation needs,” said Christine Miao, Vice President of Corporate Communications at LLH.

According to the company, both stations use advanced technologies from Linde, LLH’s joint venture partner. The stations are modular and scalable, with the flexibility to adjust capacity as demand grows.

Taiwan has been increasing its focus on hydrogen as part of its long term energy transition. The government’s 2022 Hydrogen Strategic Development Plan highlighted early deployment in transport, industrial blending, and power generation.

Pilot projects have included CPC’s hydrogen demonstration buses in Kaohsiung, Taipower’s testing of hydrogen co-firing in gas turbines, and municipal plans in Tainan to expand fuel cell bus routes. LLH has also been involved in small scale hydrogen supply and logistics trials to support these programmes.

The government views hydrogen as central to achieving net zero. In 2021 President Tsai Ing-wen announced Taiwan’s 2050 target, followed by amendments to the Greenhouse Gas Management Act. The country aims to build 7.3 GW of hydrogen power capacity by 2050.

A 2024 report by Research and Markets forecasts the global hydrogen refuelling station market to grow from 500 million dollars in 2024 to 1.8 billion dollars by 2030.
