GeoPura demonstrates hydrogen power units to UK military at RAF Waddington

The event took place in a temporary hangar set up to mimic a deployed airbase with no access to normal electricity. GeoPura’s units were used to power operations without the use of diesel generators or local grids.

A Red Arrows Hawk jet was also displayed at the event to highlight the RAF’s broader push to test cleaner energy and fuel technologies.

Military leaders, the Ministry of Defence (MOD), and industry partners all attended RAF Waddington for the demonstration. RAF representatives stated that they will explore ways to enhance resilience while reducing environmental impact.

Group Captain Leanne Warner claimed the presence of a Red Arrows Hawk “underscored an ambition to lead on sustainability in aviation.”

The HPUs work by running hydrogen through a fuel cell to produce electricity, emitting no emissions. They produce continuous, low-noise power and include batteries to handle fluctuations in demand.

GeoPura is currently the UK’s largest green hydrogen producer and has already trialled the technology with the Army, Navy and RAF for EV charging on bases.

Last year, the MOD reported that vehicles powered by GeoPura units had logged 120,000 miles.

In August 2024, the UK MOD also told H2 View that hydrogen could cut exposure to contested logistics in overseas operations while supporting operational output.

Andrew Cunningham, GeoPura CEO and founder, said, “It is encouraging to see the UK’s armed forces exploring these solutions and taking meaningful steps towards a cleaner, more secure energy future.”
