The British firm’s main project is the Saltend Green Hydrogen Hub in Hull – a 100MW hydrogen plant worth £250m ($332m). The East Riding of Yorkshire Council approved the hub last year.
Meld Energy said Schroders’ involvement will help its Saltend site move towards construction
The investment builds on Schroders Greencoat’s portfolio of more than 300MW of green hydrogen projects currently in development.
The investment house said it can offer the expertise needed to help Meld scale major projects in strategic locations. It already has 55MW of other projects backed by the UK government under the first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1).
“Our investment expertise and considerable experience of running assets creates a compelling advantage in complex markets, in turn unlocking unique opportunities for our clients,” explained Schroders’ James Samworth.
“Meld is one of those platforms – they are developing a number of projects in highly strategic locations with strong fundamentals. We believe we can achieve big things together.”
Meld’s CEO and founder, Chris Smith, added that the investment is a “massive boost” to the firm’s project ambitions in the UK.
“Schroders Greencoat brings expert capital, unique in-house engineering understanding, and a long track record of working constructively with industrial partners and government,” Smith said.
