GreenH takes FID on two Norwegian green hydrogen projects

The Oslo-headquartered firm said it had “fulfilled” the requirements set by government-owned Enova to press ahead with its developments in Kristiansund and Slagentangen.

Both projects are planned to supply green hydrogen and derivatives to the maritime sector, although exact production capacities remain undisclosed.

In Kristiansund, GreenH said its project at Vestbase will provide oil field equipment supplier NorSea Group’s customers with direct bunkering to reduce hydrogen transportation costs.

The site in Slagentangen will supply up to 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen and 100,000 tonnes of ammonia annually at Exxon Mobil affiliate Esso Norge’s terminal outside of Tønsberg.

Electrolyser maker Nel has said it entered an agreement to be technology provider for both projects, with final scope, size, and delivery schedules set to be confirmed later.

The firm said the order will be “minimum 10MW per site, totalling more than 20MW.”

The FIDs follow on from the decision to build its 6–10-tonne-per-day project in Bodø, which will supply hydrogen to Lofoten ferries under a 15-year contract in January.

GreenH was awarded NOK 391m ($38.8m) from Enova to build the three projects in November 2024.

Enova’s Senior Adviser Sigmund Ø Storset said the projects were helping the funding agency “make great strides” towards making hydrogen a “real alternative” for shipping in Norway.

It comes after two other maritime-focused Norwegian green hydrogen projects reached FID, with Nel also lined up to supply its electrolyser technology.
