HEA launches ‘state of the hydrogen nation’ survey

The HEA expects the survey to deliver a clear snapshot of the UK hydrogen industry’s current state, assessing factors such as business confidence, workforce skills, investment levels, and key challenges.

It will also offer recommendations for government actions to maximise job creation, investment, and decarbonisation opportunities in the hydrogen sector.

The final results will form a detailed report for government, businesses, and investors, scheduled for publication in early 2026.

Hydrogen will be “pivotal” to the UK’s energy ambitions, according to Dr. Emma Guthrie, CEO of the Hydrogen Energy Association.

“By hearing directly from businesses at the forefront of production, storage, distribution, end-use, and technology innovation, we can provide an evidence-based picture of the industry’s health and what is needed to unlock its full potential,” the CEO added.

The call comes ahead of the government’s upcoming update to its national hydrogen strategy.

The upcoming update has been touted as a pragmatic reset from the 2021 blueprint, which many criticised for focusing too narrowly on production.

This concern over demand was echoed earlier this year by Hayleigh Barnett of the Net Zero Technology Centre. Speaking to H2 View, she warned that despite strong policy support for hydrogen production, UK demand remains uncertain, risking an oversupply without clear end-use pathways.

Open until November 5, 2025, the survey can be accessed here.
