As the Programme Management Office (PMO) partner, the multinational infrastructure firm will ensure Project Union runs smoothly at a programme level for National Gas, keeping it on budget, on schedule, and properly managed.
“Aecom will deliver advisory capability and resourcing support to help build a high-performing PMO function for delivery of the East Coast section,” the company explained.
“Aecom’s team will work closely with National Gas in a fully integrated manner, helping to develop the client’s major projects capability in the longer term.”
Meanwhile, National Gas and WSP will progress with the front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for the East Coast section of the project.
Led by National Gas Transmission (NGT), the initiative aims to repurpose parts of the National Transmission System (NTS) and construct new infrastructure, targeting approximately 1,500 miles of hydrogen pipelines.
The first phase of the project will focus on the UK’s east coast. It’s scheduled to connect Track 1 hydrogen clusters in Humber and Teesside through 200km of new hydrogen pipeline and up to 250km of repurposed methane pipeline.
Future phases will expand the network across the country.
“Establishing a new hydrogen backbone is an important step in accelerating the UK’s clean energy transition,” claimed Richard Whitehead, Aecom’s Chief Exec for Europe and India.
“Project Union will unlock the growth of hydrogen production in the UK, provide essential low-carbon gas storage to enhance energy security and support the country’s 2050 Net Zero ambitions.”
