Germany targets SMEs with second funding round for global hydrogen projects

Launched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), the funding will be focused mainly on small and medium-sized German enterprises (SMEs), developers, and technology suppliers that are looking to partner outside the EU and Switzerland.

The funding is expected to cover two areas. Module one, led by the Economics Ministry, will support hydrogen and derivative production plants abroad, while Module 2, led by the Research Ministry, will fund related research, trials, and training.

However, Dedicated support for storage and transport infrastructure has been dropped in this round, though such measures could still be included as part of production projects.

Nevertheless, H2 View understands the funding is not yet guaranteed and will remain subject to approval under Germany’s 2026 federal budget, which is due to be finalised later this year.

German companies can submit project plans to the BMWE from December 18, 2025.

An information event is reportedly scheduled for 13 October 2025, ahead of the application window.
