As a result, founder Jonas Moberg will move into a strategic board role on October 15, 2025. The new CEO is expected to lead GH2’s push for stronger policy support, cost reductions, and project scale-up across the industry.
Williams has served as GH2’s deputy CEO since 2023, after previously leading advocacy at the Natural Resource Governance Institute.
“The green hydrogen sector has faced headwinds over the last couple of years, and there is still work to do to drive down the cost of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia,” the incoming CEO said.
“Governments need to go further in the shift from fossil fuels to renewables. Smart policies, financial solutions and robust emissions standards are needed for green hydrogen to compete with fossil fuel alternatives.”
Since it was launched in 2021, the Swiss non-profit foundation has promoted stronger policies and financing mechanisms, while also building coalitions between industry, governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Major renewable energy and hydrogen companies back GH2, including Fortescue, CWP, Adani Renewables, Envision, and ReNew.
The new CEO added, “With strong corporate, government, philanthropic and civil society partners, GH2 will continue to drive the sector forward to ensure the world can tackle the hard last mile of decarbonisation to achieve energy security and prosperity.”
The change comes at a time when several governments are reassessing hydrogen subsidies and investment timelines, while rising project costs and delays in final investment decisions (FID) have tempered early growth expectations.
Recent Rystad Energy research found that strategic pivots were the leading cause of low-carbon hydrogen project cancellations, with majors such as BP and Origin Energy suspending plans to cut costs and refocus on core businesses.
