Salzgitter delays hydrogen steel project expansion by three years

German steelmaker Salzgitter AG will push back the expansion phases of its €3.5bn ($4.1bn) hydrogen-based steelmaking project by up to three years due to regulatory delays, though its initial 100MW phase remains on track for 2026.

The project at Salzgitter’s Flachstahl site will bring alkaline electrolysers, a direct reduction plant and an electric arc furnace online as planned in 2026, but subsequent stages have been pushed back, the company confirmed to H2 View.
