The race, whose format is yet to be announced, will take place in the currently under-construction city against a backdrop of the Tuwaiq Mountains.

Racing will start with a final Extreme E Desert X Prix on 4–5 October to conclude the predecessor championship before Extreme H begins its inaugural event on 5–11 October.

“Designed to provide a fitting conclusion for Extreme E, celebrating everything it achieved, where it all first started, before we officially make the transition to the new era of hydrogen with Extreme H,” said Alejandro Agag, founder of Extreme E & H.

Details of Extreme H’s format, teams, drivers, and partners are yet to be announced, but are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Extreme H and the FIA agreed a “multi-year” agreement to deliver the hydrogen-powered World Cup.

The FIA-sanctioned championship is hoped to demonstrate the viability and potential of hydrogen in transport applications. The race will see drivers use the fuel cell-powered Pioneer 25 car, equipped with 2kg of hydrogen storage and a 75kW fuel cell.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the event would “push the boundaries” of sustainable racing.
