The German energy firm plans to connect the electrolyser, located adjacent to the 1.4GW Magnum Power Station, to the 795MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm being developed in collaboration with TotalEnergies.
Funding is expected to support the project’s next phase. Before RWE can take a final investment decision (FID), it must carry out the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED), identify construction partners and secure offtake.
The milestone comes almost a year after RWE secured construction and environmental permits to build the electrolyser plant in Eemshaven. Last year, the firm announced that the FID is contingent on the development of necessary hydrogen transport infrastructure.
“Both milestones are critical steps towards realising the OranjeWind electrolyser project,” said Sopna Sury, Chief Operating Officer for Hydrogen at RWE. “Once operational, it will help advance the decarbonisation of industry in the Netherlands.”
RWE is also building a 50MW electrolyser plant at the Eems Power Station, located near the Magnum site. Last year, the German company was awarded €124.9m ($146m) to advance its hydrogen initiatives in the region as part of a wider funding round.
