Finland rolls out first hydrogen buses in Jyväskylä pilot

The H2.City Gold units were rolled out on selected city routes to assess their performance under real-world conditions and were also deployed during the WRC Rally in early August.

The buses were introduced into the region’s public transport network through a pilot led by the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) and leased to public transport operator, Koiviston Auto Jyväskylä.

Tiago Sá, Sales Director at CaetanoBus, said launching the hydrogen buses during the WRC event was a significant milestone.

H2 View understands that Portugal’s CaetanoBus has sold over 215 electric-hydrogen buses across Europe and registered 31 fuel cell buses in 2024, giving it an 8% market share, behind only Solaris and Wrightbus.

The H2.City Gold is co-branded with Toyota, which supplies its fuel cell technology and also holds a direct stake in CaetanoBus through Toyota Caetano Portugal.

While passenger cars lag behind, heavy-duty vehicles are driving hydrogen mobility. Buses, trucks and trains are emerging as the most promising solutions for long-range and fast refuelling.

Speaking to H2 View, Rob Castien, CEO of Resato Hydrogen Technology, said that hydrogen-powered buses will dominate near-term demand for hydrogen refuelling.
