Transport for Wales plans hydrogen bus trial in Swansea

According to reports, the city will trial hydrogen-powered public transport operations and explore the development of a hydrogen refuelling hub on Fabian Way.

H2 View understands that Swansea Council expect the buses to be operational from 2027.

“We’re helping the Welsh government’s ambition for buses to be zero-emission by 2035,” TfW said in a statement.

“We’re investigating the potential for trialling hydrogen fuel cell buses in Swansea as part of our work to support the growth of a hydrogen bus fleet in Wales.

“The scheme will reduce pollution and allow local people to travel in an environmentally friendly way.”

Elsewhere in the UK, hydrogen-powered buses have operated in Aberdeen since 2020, but First Bus’s plan announced in 2024 to install a refuelling station at its city depot has raised local concerns.

Nevertheless, Resato Hydrogen Technology’s CEO, Rob Castien, recently told H2 View that hydrogen-powered buses are set to dominate near-term demand for hydrogen refuelling.

He said the public mobility segment had a solid business case behind it, despite concerns about hydrogen’s potential in the wider mobility market.

Hydrogen-powered buses to dominate near-term European refuelling demand: Resato

Hydrogen-powered buses will dominate near-term demand for hydrogen refuelling, according to the CEO of Resato Hydrogen Technology.

Rob Castien, boss of Resato’s hydrogen refuelling spin-off, told H2 View, the public mobility segment had a solid business case behind it, despite concerns about hydrogen’s potential in the wider mobility market.

“2025 to 2026 will be the years when bus projects are the most interesting for us to go to,” the CEO explained. “This is because it’s actual business with real vehicles and real stations.

“If you look at hydrogen-powered vehicle availability, buses are available today,” he added. “Beyond, let’s say 2026, the trucks will become more dominant.”
