The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) approved the $7.8m funding round under the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s central financial assistance (CFA) scheme, which is designed to accelerate green hydrogen deployment.
The National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) will receive $2m for a project being developed in Pune, western India, while energy research organisation ANERT has been allocated $2.4m for its Kerala plans.
Two further initiatives led by the Indian Institutes of Technology have been awarded $1.7m and $1.6m for projects in Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur, respectively.
Located in HVICs, the produced hydrogen is expected to serve both existing industrial uses and emerging sectors where it’s being promoted as a sustainable energy solution.
According to HVIC and green hydrogen hub guidelines in India, the Department of Science and Technology will issue the letter of award and approval to the recipients once the MNRE provides clearance.
The CFA will be disbursed to the company set up by each cluster as per the recommendations of the Project Appraisal Committee.
In July 2023, MNRE launched a $48.12m R&D roadmap under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to commercialise green hydrogen.
Since then, India has introduced several initiatives to develop domestic and export infrastructure in a bid to meet its energy targets, including five million tonnes of green hydrogen per year from 2030.
At the 2025 Budget release, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi, stated, “Very shortly we are going to reach 75GW [of renewable energy], and in two or three years… 100GW.”
