Hydrogen UK launches young professionals network

The Young Hydrogen Professional Network will give members access to Hydrogen UK’s briefings and industry reports, as well as discounts on events, to support careers.

The programme will be chaired by Megan Backhouse, Senior Project Engineer at BOC, who won the Future Hydrogen Leader Award at the trade body’s annual conference and awards last week.

“This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for young professionals to connect, learn, and contribute to the future of hydrogen,” Backhouse said.

The launch comes at a crucial time in the hydrogen market, where various companies have recently cut jobs as they look to reduce spending.

A recent H2 View webinar heard that many new professionals are either entering the oil and gas industry directly or returning to traditional energy projects – often drawn by better financial incentives.

Hydrogen UK CEO, Clare Jackson, said the network was a key step in “nurturing the next generation of leaders” in hydrogen.

“We are committed to supporting young professionals as they drive innovation in the hydrogen sector,” Jackson said.

The UK government’s Clean Power 2030 action plan recently highlighted “acute” skills challenges across clean energy sectors, with the UK’s ageing workforce expected to play a role – with one in three in the sector being aged over 50.
