The aviation sector requires masses amounts of energy to operate and, with the long distances and requirement for lighter solutions, HyPoint’s hydrogen fuel cells are aiming to tackle this market by providing a unique solution.

Ivanenko told the H2 View event, “Existing fuel cells have the necessary level of energy density, and they potentially could work, but they fall short on specific power requirements and weight of the system.

“Modern vehicles require no less than 1500kW per kilogram but existing fuel cells at system level can only deliver maximum 1000kW.

“It means there is no power source which could meet requirements of air transportation market.

“To solve this issue, we are building the next generation of hydrogen fuel cell system with both high-density power and high energy density – this is exactly what aircraft designers are looking for.”

But how does HyPoint plan to tackle the aviation market? Through the company’s NASA award-winning turbo air-cooled hydrogen fuel cell system with the technology said to deliver an unprecedented combination of specific power and energy density.

“The core innovation is the new system architecture, which is called Turbo air-cooled fuel cell system that efficiently utilises compressed air for both coolant and oxygen supply,” Ivanenko explained.

“Simply put, we increase pressure inside the fuel cell, delivering more oxygen in the electrochemical reaction, and that allowed us to dramatically increase power outage.”

This increased energy output allows for more energy to be used to power the aircraft whilst also maintaining its minimal weight and size – key aspects to flight.

Ivanenko said, “We are focussing on coolant efficiency because existing fuel cells, based on low temperature, especially for high power level, require a very very heavy coolant system, which is usually as much as two times heavier than the fuel cell stack itself.”

The technology could provide a huge breakthrough in the aviation market with hydrogen set to create a huge buzz with major companies already pledging their commitment.

HyPoint’s technology cool be at the forefront of this green revolution.
