Powered by a 230kW electric motor that draws energy from a 170kWh battery, the buses will be deployed on route 2A and 3A in the Austrian capital.
The Rsmpini Hydro Range Extenders will be refuelled at a hydrogen filling station provided by Wien Energie and Wiener Netze, with green hydrogen locally produced in Vienna used.
H2 View understands that the hydrogen-powered vehicles can run operations all day without charging interruptions. This will eliminate the need the electric charging infrastructure in the city.
From 2025, pure hydrogen buses will also be supplied to Wiener Linien. The deal will ensure 10 buses from Portuguese manufacturer CaetanoBus will be delivered to operate on route 39A.
Gudrun Senk, Managing Director of Wiener Linien for the Technical Department, said, “This innovative battery-hydrogen technology enables all day operation without charging interruptions.
“The required green hydrogen is produced directly on site in Vienna, making our operations independent and climate neutral.”
Across Europe, Solaris Bus & Coach has been leading the way in hydrogen-powered bus deployments, and most recently secured a contract to supply four Urbino 12 units to northern France.
