The planned 50MW electrolysis plant is expected to save more than 250,000 tonnes of CO2 once it comes online in 2027.

The Netherlands Agency Enterprise (RVO) awarded the funding to RWE, which is hoped to be a “crucial component” in making the project economically viable. RWE plans to take a financial investment decision (FID) by the end of 2024.

An environmental and building permit has already been secured for the Eemshydrogen project and RWE is now in contact with potential off takers. Construction and equipment suppliers will be contacted following an FID.

Sopna Sury, COO Hydrogen RWE Generation, said, “By supplying clean hydrogen, for example to the transport sector and chemical plants, our Eemshaven site will help reduce carbon emissions of industrial companies in north western Europe.”

RWE is planning to invest €55bn ($58bn) to expand its green hydrogen portfolio to 65GW across the globe by 2030, with 2GW of electrolysis capacity in its core markets.

The company recently announced it will develop a green hydrogen production facility in Essex, the UK, in collaboration with Haltermann Carless (HCS).

An electrolyser will be introduced to HCS’ site, however the amount of green hydrogen they plan to produce has not been confirmed.
