Under the agreement, EIA and ZeroAvia will work together to develop hydrogen infrastructure at both Villeneuve Airport and the main airport, with hopes of exploring the use of hydrogen to decarbonise aircraft operations and the wider airport ecosystem.

Leveraging on ZeroAvia’s experience in operating and developing its Hydrogen Airport Refuelling Ecosystem (HARE), the partners will begin with gaseous hydrogen as a fuel, while also exploring a shift to liquid hydrogen for larger aircraft.

The partnership follows ZeroAvia’s announcement on Wednesday (July 20) that it had received a further $30m in funding to develop its 2-5MW hydrogen-electric powertrain programme by building live demonstrations of its HARE system at airport sites.

H2 View understands the latest collaboration will see the companies conduct a pilot programme to fuel a demonstrator aircraft as well as other operations, before working towards establishing some of the world’s first commercial routes.

Myron Keehn, Vice-President of Air Service, Business Development, ESG, and Stakeholder Relations at Edmonton International Airport, said, “We are excited to work with ZeroAvia, a global leader in zero-emission aviation. We believe that hydrogen will be a key technology to decarbonise aviation and airport operations for a Net Zero future.

“ZeroAvia’s innovations, achievements, and shared values made it natural for us to develop a collaboration. Airports can help drive the adoption of hydrogen, thereby reducing emissions and improving air quality across the scope of their operations and beyond.”

Arnab Chatterjee, Vice-President of Infrastructure at ZeroAvia, commented, “Edmonton International Airport has been a leader in pushing the envelope in efforts to tackle emissions using innovative technology. The massive renewable installation, natural resources, flight operations and administrative autonomy, makes EIA a great partner for us.”
