The funding opportunity is set to advance the DOE’s Hydrogen Shot goal of reducing the cost of clean hydrogen to one dollar per one kilogramme in one decade (1 1 1), while also supporting it H2@Scale initiative, aiming to advance the affordable production, transport, storage, and utilisation of clean hydrogen.

H2 View understands the DOE is encouraging teams including stakeholders within academia, industry, and national laboratories across multiple disciplines to apply for the funding which it envisions in the form of multiple financial assistance awards as cooperative agreements ranging between two to four years.

The application is set to include two phases: a concept paper and a full application. Concept papers are due on September 23, 2022, with full applications due on December 1, 2022.

Commenting on the funding, Jennifer Granholm, US Secretary of Energy, said, “DOE is laser focused on building a future with cleaner manufacturing, transportation, and electricity — all of which can be achieved with clean hydrogen technology. These investments will advance cutting-edge technologies and empower state, territory, and tribal leaders to make the best, informed decisions about improving and decarbonising the electric power grid.”

As part of the same package of funding the DOE is also launching a $20m university research consortium to help state and tribal communities successfully implement grid resilience programmes and achieve decarbonisation goals.

The additional funding follows shortly on from the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act which offers up to $3 per kilogramme of clean hydrogen produced in tax credits and $7,500 for new fuel cell-electric vehicles.
