Using the same Toyota-designed fuel cell as seen in its Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the demonstration generated electricity throughout the Round 19 match of the AFL, between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons.

Coming in the form of the EODev GENH2 unit, previously used to power a lighting system on the shoot of Netflix series last year (2021), Toyota says only 10-15% of the unit’s capacity was required, providing a total of 105kW per hour across the seven-hour period.

Running in the lead-up to and during the game, H2 View understands the unit used 6kg of hydrogen, which Toyota believes saved an estimated 100kg of carbon dioxide emissions compared to running the lights off the electricity grid.

Matt Macleod, Manager of Energy Solutions at Toyota Australia, said, “Toyota sees hydrogen fuel cells as a key source of clean, renewable electrical energy going forward, as evidenced by vehicles like the Mirai FCEV.

“Partnering with the AFL to help power the Round 19 game at Marvel Stadium shows the incredible scope this technology has, all while producing no carbon dioxide emissions.”

In pursuit of raising further awareness of its fuel cell technology, the automotive giant displayed a cross-section of its Mirai and FCEV powertrain at the stadium concourse.

In 2019, Toyota revealed a fleet of 27 of its hydrogen-powered Mirai, operated by Tomato cars in London, had driven a milestone of one million miles in and around the UK capital.
