CF Industries to construct green hydrogen-based ammonia facility in Louisiana

Recognised as one of the world’s largest tonnage ports, the company said, the export potential of hydrogen and ammonia from this region could make it a powerhouse for zero-carbon technologies and help scale hydrogen technologies in the maritime industry.

This could be crucial for the wider US market as well with the port situated along the Mississippi Rover – a major network route for ships and trade.

Enabling the production of hydrogen and ammonia here could have drastic results on the US hydrogen market and turn the nation into a powerhouse for the clean energy carrier.

Once completed, the facility will have a capacity of up to 4,000 tonnes of green ammonia per day and thus could provide the fuel for the growing demand within the maritime industry.

Ammonia is also regarded as one of the most efficient methods in transporting hydrogen and thus this could help move vast quantities of hydrogen across the US and also into the international markets.

Gary Benninger, CEO of AmmPower, said, “This is truly an incredible step for AmmPower. We have known since the inception of this company that green ammonia was the future of the shipping industry & green energy movement.

“Striking such a formative deal with one of the largest ports in the world is validation of that vision. We could not be more fortunate to work with the incredible people at Port of South Louisiana, one of the largest tonnage ports in the western hemisphere.

“This initiative allows the Port of South Louisiana, being the largest energy transfer port in the United States, to move towards green hydrogen and ammonia in a robust manner. Indeed, POSL is not only one of the largest ports in the world, but will now have the infrastructure to support any oceangoing vessels that require green ammonia for fuel.

“AmmPower looks forward to working closely with the Port of South Louisiana to help become industry leaders in the transition to green energy within the maritime industry.”
