Ports of Stockholm and CMB.TECH seek to establish a major hydrogen collaboration at Stockholm Norvik Port, with an investment allowing the companies to offer customers and collaboration partners the ability to convert to hydrogen, by building a hydrogen refuelling station adjacent to the port.

H2 View understands, in the first phase, the partners will look to convert port vehicles to run on green hydrogen, with the first hydrogen-fuelled terminal truck planned to be in operation at the port in 2023.

The hydrogen project at the port is set to make up part of the overall develop to use cleaner fuels for overland transport and shipping, the companies have said, contributing to the wider climate goals of removing fossil fuels from operations by 2030.

Anna König Jerlmyr, Mayor of Stockholm, commented, “Hydrogen will play a crucial role in converting to fossil fuel-free transport, both on land and at sea. We are therefore extremely pleased to announce this partnership with CMB.TECH and this drive for hydrogen.

“This is entirely aligned with the ambitious environmental goals of Ports of Stockholm for operations to be fossil fuel-free by 2030.”

CMB.TECH hope to leverage on its maritime experience for the project. The company announced in May (2022), with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, that the ‘first hydrogen-powered tugboat’ would be operational in 2023.

Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, said, “Being able to enter into this partnership with Ports of Stockholm at the new freight port, Stockholm Norvik, is a pleasure.

“This is the first port in Sweden we have worked with, and we hope to be able to contribute with our knowledge and experience in converting from diesel to hydrogen. This provides entirely new possibilities to further develop Stockholm Norvik Port as the climate-smart port it already is.”
