The contract will see 171 6.5MW wind turbines installed at the NEOM project in Oxagon, Saudi Arabia, as part of the mega-project’s plans to produce up to 600 tonnes of “carbon-free” hydrogen by the end of 2026.

NEOM aims to produce hydrogen using solely renewable energy sources including wind and solar. The project is expected to form a critical part in the promotion of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 Mission of reducing carbon emissions while simultaneously encouraging economic growth and job creation.

“This contract represents a significant milestone for both our companies and the industry at large,” said Zhang Lei, CEO of Envision Energy. “We are proud to be associated with such an ambitious project that will pave the way for other companies to follow suit in pursuing sustainable initiatives.”

Last month (May 2022), NGHC announced the financial close of the NEOM project with an investment value totalling $8.4bn.

NGCH secured an exclusive 30-year offtake agreement with Air Products for all the green ammonia produced at the facility.

Wolfgang Brand, Vice-President of NEOM Green Hydrogen at Air Products, said the wind turbine contract showcases a commitment towards meeting sustainability objectives through project deliveries.

David Edmondson, CEO of NGHC, added, “Partnering with Envision Energy to deliver sustainable energy will enable NGHC to drive our vision of leading the global energy transition. We look forward to working closely as one team over the next few years during the project execution phase and subsequently into long-term reliable operation.”

NEOM – Making a bold move toward the hydrogen economy

When Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman landed his helicopter on the edge of the Saudi Arabian desert beside the Red Sea a few years ago, it wasn’t rocky desert and empty coastline that he saw, but instead over 26,000km2 of inspiration. It was there he came up with ambitious plans for a $500bn futuristic mega-city powered by renewable energy: NEOM.

NEOM is a bold and audacious dream; a vision of what a new future might look – in fact, NEOM means ‘new future’. It’s an attempt to do something that’s never been done before, and it will be a place where entrepreneurship and innovation will chart the course for this ‘new future’. With flying cars and robotic domestic help, NEOM will be a home for people who dream big and want to be part of building a new model for sustainable living, working and prospering.

It is also the flagship project of Saudi Arabia’s post-oil diversification plan, 2030 Vision, and the region has an ambition to become the world’s largest producer and exporter of green hydrogen, chemicals and fuels through dedicated partnerships and alliances.
